Private Investigator Humphrey Bogart is hired by a rich dying paraplegic to look after his younger daughter (Martha Vickers, who out sexes older sister Lasuren Bacall). Along the way he gets involved with the other sister, employees of the family, and assorted low lifes as well as blackmail and murder. William Faulner was one of the writers who adapted the Raymond Chandler novel and I have always found the film overlong and talky, despite periodic action scenes. Max Steiner did the music. A must if you are into film noir.
Follow Ups:
That was freaky, but even better was my dawning realization that the book's plot was exactly as in the movie, no changes -- nor was any of the motivation more explicable. Talk about faithful.
finest films of any genre, held together by the incendiary relationship between Bogie and Bacall.
Terrific tension, one of the best chase scenes and what is still a startling and unexpected end to that "act," an extremely entertaining, bizarre, and complex plot, and bristling action throughout.
This, without a doubt, is the thinking man's ultimate detective thriller.
Big Sleep is a wonderful film, in my personal top ten best, and
second only to Chinatown as best drama/dick flick/film noir.
a
No doubt one of the best, energetic and sexual laden, quick and intelligent, what ask for more?
he seduced women by ignoring or insulting them and he mercilessly (and gleefully) shot down his adversaries.
The scene in the bookstore is also the most brazenly sexual of American film to that time. The nerdy bookstore woman pulling the shade...
Yeah, a kind of mental blow job...
And both ladies are ravishing but Betty Bacall had something special. Although very attractive she was not a great beauty but she positively oozed sexuality and intelligence. She and Bogart had real chemistry. The film is beautifully written and directed and requires the viewer to be attentive. So what if there is little "action" compared to more recent films? Do the rest right and you don't need all that.In my 1 to 10 movie scale, THE BIG SLEEP is a solid 9 1/2.
What wxacrly was I 'wrong" about? I said it was talky (it is) and overlong (it is). I also said it was a must if you are a film noir fan.
talky nor overlong.
"Talky" means excess: the brilliant dialogue is central to the film.
"Overlong" means scenes could be shortened or cut: which ones? None.
You also say it is a "must see" for noir fans, meaning that others needn't see it or that it's unnecessary.
Wrong again.
Three strikes, pobresito.
... that we used to expect more talking in action films.
These days someone would have shot up the entire city within Humph's first scene...
So it goes.
Benicio del Toro doing his best Bogie interpretation.
