The Deerhunter.
At Close Range.
Pulp Fiction.
The Comfort of Strangers.
In all four films, he created unforgettable characters.
Major characters... almost archetypal. And, unlike many great actors, you don't see Walken so much as the character himself: they are distinct individuals.
I can't think of any actor that has four better films on his résumé, either.
Follow Ups:
Robert Duvall: The Godfather, The Great Santini, The Apostle, Tender Mercies, Lonsome Dove, Apocalypse Now, To Kill A MockingbirdGene Hackman: The Conversation, The French Connection, Unforgiven, Night Moves, Hoosiers
Jeff Bridges: Fearless, The Fabulous Baker Boys, White Squall, The Fisher King, Fat City, Heaven's Gate, The Last Picture Show, Tucker - The Man & His Dream
Robert Deniro: Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Godfather II, Goodfellas, the Mission, Jackie Brown
David Straithairn: Good Night & Good Luck, Matewan, Eight Men Out, Passion Fish, LA Confidential, Delores Claiborne, Return of the Secaucus Seven
Chris Cooper: Lone Star, Adaptation, Matewan, Capote, Syriana, October Sky, American Beauty
I'm probably leaving out a bunch but that's off the top of my head.

--Space for those I forgot --
Playing totally against type as the army drill instructor in this memorable Mike Nichols film. Walken has fine comic timing and I wish he would do more light roles.I thought he was a good villan in "View To a Kill." He does a great megalomaniac.
That's always the first thing I notice whenever I see him in a movie. Don't know why, but it always bothers me.
I would pit this resume against your Walken resume...King Of Comedy
Raging Bull
Taxi Driver
Godfather Part 2
Deer Hunter
Goodfellas
Jackie Brown...and both DeNiro and Walken are sleepwalking lately so the "(today)" part of your post I disregard .
four times.
Walken is different each time.
Rupert Pupkin is like Jake La Motta? Absurd!Rupert Pupkin couldn't be more different then Michael Vronsky - or could young Vito Corlene be more different then Travis Bickle. That's why I submitted those characters.
excellent character portrayals.
The others... great direction (if you like Scorscese...) but over the top acting.
I think DeNiro overacts a lot but, similar to Streep, he creates such an intriguing spectacle that it is seen as "great."
I prefer to agree with Shakespeare's dictum when I judge acting.
William Dafoe, Gary Oldman and Gary Sinese. All actors that create memorable characters in (usually) supporting roles. Though the others are considerably younger than Walken...
..I know it's flawed but what a fresco.
Walken is wonderful - I haven't noticed but apparently, as he was a professional dancer before becoming an actor, he tries to slip in a dance movement in all of his films.
Of recent, I particularly enjoyed him playing the angel Gabriel in the fist "Prophecy" movie (before they got silly). I think he suits what Cary Grant once said, "I wish I could be Cary Grant".
Walken got his start on Broadway as a dancerin musicals. He was once in a show with Tommy Tune as part of a chorus of very tall guys (I think it was a musical version of Sherlock Holmes).

Ex nihilo, nihil fit . . .
Priceless.
Regular guy in that film. Also see "Who Am I This Time?" where he has a romantic role opposite Susan Sarandon (okay, I admit he's "damaged goods" in this one). His gifts include great comedic acting. Nobody does better SNL shows than Walken. "A glass of fine French sham-paaay-ne before you go?"
