Not bad. Where has Giamatti been these past decades? We've always needed him. Nobody better personifies the average schlub better than him. Here he plays a schlub who must transcend to greater heights and does it well.As the super of a decaying apartment building, he discovers a "narf" has been using the pool at night. Slowly a relationship builds between narf and super and the story unfolds around the legend that surrounds her (Ron Howard's daughter, Bryce).
The cast is full of interesting charcters and M.Night does well as a character with a major presence in this ensemble-flavored story that has more humor than horror. (Bob Balaban, without a doubt, has the best scene in the film that ends with a twist.)
This movie lacks the intensity of 6th Sense or Signs but comes across as "spiritual" vehicle with a message of hope.
Part popcorn, part humor, part serious, mostly entertaining.
Follow Ups:
As in his earlier movies. This one is very tight and well thought out. I like the way he so blatently poked fun at film conventions, integrated that into the story and managed to avoid most of the conventions he made fun of. he was more in the moment on this one than in his previous movies. I liked that.
...to quote Lisa Schwarzbaum in Entertainment Weekly,"...to help Dorothy get back to Kansas. I mean to help E.T. get back to the spaceship. I mean to help Story get back to the Blue World, and in doing so, discover the bit of spiritual blue that exists within each of us if only we belive in Tinker Bell, ecology, Jungian archtypes, and the possibility of being touched by an angel."

I like Shaymalan's low key film style and hope he's abandoned trying to rely on the surprise plot twist ending a la "6th Sense". "Signs" was OK, but "The Village" was both obvious and dull. Sounds like he's finally moved on, and if so that'll be good for his movies.
closet thing.
I felt like I'd just wasted a few hours on a pretty average shaggy dog story. Joachim seemed very miscast as a "normal" guy. He just looks bizarre. An average Joe he ain't.
M Night is often Good Night, methinks.
While subtle surprises and plot twists are the director's specialty, he needs to realize that a little of that goes a long way. Too much shows how clever he is but it also shows that that cleverness masks a strong lack of imagination.Instead of plotting we get plodding. He makes a 110 minute film seem like 410 minutes!
I don't want him to make dumb action films ala Veerhoven or, much worse, something like "Commando." I would like him to pick up the pace and give his interesting characters (and he does present very interesting characters) something to do. He's clever, but so was Hitchcock and so is Tarentino and they are both far more interesting filmmakers. I give M. Night a C+. His films are not bad films but they could be so much better.
