Finally, a note about the ingenious casting and imaginative use of at least a dozen actors. I don't know of any other director, not even Scorsese, who handles so vividly yet economically such a large gallery of secondary roles.Arguably one of the two or three best directors working in Hollywood today, Mann is a master with lots of talent to spare. Even when his work is not entirely successful, it's still intriguing to behold from a physical and sensual standpoint. "Miami Vice" offers a visceral cinematic encounter of the first and highest kind.

I must be missing something. I *liked* The Insider and Last of the Mohicans. Colateral was OK. Ali stank. The Keep was unwatchable. I don't see the greatness here.
in years....It was IMO unjustly overlooked at the Oscars....Day-Lewis is another whose talent I find amazing...
Probably a testament to the crap trying to be passed off on us as cinema these days that Michael Mann is now at the top of the heap. Not that I could do it any better, but it seems that the proverbial bar keeps getting lower and lower.
There is still plenty of fine film making being done here in our little town.
Agreed. The one common denominator being that they are not part of said machine, nor do they subscribe to said formula. There is always hope.
Mann also did Manhunter, the original movie about Hannibal Lector and better than Silence of the lambs, which got great reviews but I agree it does not make him one of the best...
I thought Silence of the lambs was far superior. Just my opinion
