Caught this one last night at a very crowded theater..
After reading the less than stellar reviews, my expectations were somewhat reduced but Miami Vice exceeded them all and then some. I would rate this one as better than Collateral but not quite as good as Heat (a real masterpiece and one of the best crime flicks ever made).Mann appears to be experimenting with camera angles since he gives us even more hand held shots and many, many extreme, screen filling close ups of his characters. The viwer is immersed into the action instead of simply viewing it from afar.
Speaking of charactors although Jamie Foxx is classed as a star the movie is really all about Colin Farrell and Gong Li. I swear after the first quarter into the movie Gong Li has more scenes and way more dialogue than Foxx. I don’t remember another of Li’s movies where she showed such a range of emotions. Also interesting she has so many lines since she supposedly can’t speak a word of English. She did a fine job by the way. She was at her icy best as a dragon lady but those times she laughed or loved were joys to behold
Miami Vice exhibits Mann’s usual extreme attention to details where the most minute item looks just so and is placed just so. You want action? Although Mann does take his time building up the setup- and the relationship between Farrell and Li, when the action comes it is abrupt and extremely brutal. A solid A from me.
Follow Ups:
MTV style and camera shots. This is a slick production with TV movie style action. Also when will they stop with the grainy look? Is this a lack of conveying subtance?I just did not care about anyone in the film, and why call it Miami Vice? Does it make it easier to sell? Yes it has some cool action sequences and Gong Li - well, just bless her for being in this movie, maybe we will see more of her because of the exposure she gets here and that is a good thing.
I agree it is better than Collateral - by a hair but I had hoped for better because I like Michael Mann. His style is unmistakable here but, where is the story?
Sorry to sound so negative and if all you want is to get out of the heat it was worth 4 bucks for me - by a hair as well. :^)
bleep
a really really really really fucking bad love story. The one thing I did not expect was such a god awfully boring movie. The levels to which this movie sank were surrealistic. Colin Farrell set a new bar for bad acting. His entire performance reminded me of that one moment where Malcom McDonald ordered food in Time after Time. The movie is sooooo slow that it gives one far too much time to ponder the gross holes in the plot. When they finally did get around to shooting each other up it was a releif....until upon some critical examination even that turned out to be painfully stupid. If they were to edit out about a half hour of silly mood scenes we might have a cult classic along the lines of Plan Nine. As it stands Plan Nine is still far more watchable. Just my opinion.

Let's face it, I doubt two Miami vice cops would be so sophisticated in the ways of international crime dealings as they were. Their bluffing and carrying on was just too much.Gong was very good, it's just too bad she's really not that easy to look at.
...made frequent trips to NYC, Miami... tested positive for drugs (along with *75* others... Got found with tens of thousands of cash in their station lockers... Maybe that's not *international*, but I'm betting cops can be clued-in to the game.
.
Meant to say where Malcom McDowell ordered at McDonalds. Not Malcom McDonald.
I knew that's what has happened.
the film business? Any interest in this film?
The loud trumpeting seems... unusual for this forum.
So anyone who mentions a movie is now heavily hyping it?
