weaker "Match Point."
Woody plays... well, Woody. He's funny as hell. At least five jokes had me guffawing loudly.
No, not a classic by any means but damn good entertainment.
Scarlett is maybe 15 pounds overweight but does a far better job than in "MP."
Jackman proves he is not much of an actor: kind of a taller, buffer Keanu. Wooden delivery, amazingly small range of expressiveness both vocal and facial.
This is Woody's picture and he delivers, especially for a guy his age, an energetic and hilarioius performance.
Oh, the plot?
A serial killer is stalking London and Scarlett, a student journalist, follows the signs pointing to Jackman's character.
He is the son of a Lord yet the film misses many opportunities to poke fun at the Brit upper class: Woody is no Preston Sturges, Bunuel, or Renoir, that's for sure.
But, in a summer of crap, this light comedy stands out.
Follow Ups:
This was no Take the Money and Run, Sleeper, Bananas, or Play it again Sam. It sure wasn't any Annie Hall or Manhattan. I think I would call it a *step* in the right direction. This movie is a far cry from Woody Allen at his best.

Scarlett's character's roomate's looked even better.
do tell, who was the roomate?

...actor/comedian. Very funny, in an old fashioned burlesque kind of way with the Henny Youngman/Rodney Dangerfield type of one-liners. The old Woody is back. But I didn't think there was very much to Scoop as far as the plot developments go - "Woody lite". It sort of just ends.
Enjoyable, yes, but not near the quality of Match Point, IMO.
I laughed the hardest when they mentioned the death of WA's character and they cut to him in the boat bitching about driving on the "God Damm" wrong side of the road. Great timing in that. I also cracked up when he called the Jews harp the Blues harp because "Any hint of anti-semitism and those people write letters"All in all - even though the critical consensus was the opposite - I felt that this, though lighter, was better written and better acted. A very entertaining 90 minutes.
P.S. You have a strange hang up about the weight/shape of actresses.

Hardly a strange "hang-up," sj.
I just like my leading ladies to be... attractive. Now, if looks don't matter to you, fine. If that's the case, I'm sure you shake your head in wonderment at why fine 200-lb. actresses aren't cast as romantic leads.
Anyhow, the jokes you mention had me rolling in the aisles but the funniest for me was the one he cracked to the pukka-pukka Englishman at that party: "I was born into the Hebrew persuasion but I converted to narcissism."
I think several people around me were on the verge of telling me to shut up since I couldn't stop laughing well into the next scene...
