Judi Dench and Maggie Smith star as elderly spinster sisters in 1939 coastal Cornwall on thge brink of WW II. They discover a shipwrecked young Polish man washed up on their beach and they get medical care for him and feed him and over time teach him English. As time passes each begins to have romanatic/erotic feelings for him and a rivalry develops. He turns out to be a talented but untrained violinist and he starts a liason with a woman artist more his own age, to the dismay of the sisters. The woman convinces the young man to go to London with her to audition for her brother, a world remown concert violinist. Actor Charles Dance directed this chaming film and I want to recommend it.
Follow Ups:
I think it a film to see for the performances. If you like Dench and Smith, then see the film. The story is rather predictable, and a little far fetched. Anyone else think that we do not see enough of Maggie Smith?
