George Pal produced this one after the release of "Destination Moon". It is the grand daddy of all "heavenly body crashes into the Earth" flicks and is based on a 1930's novel (of which I believe there were sequels). A rich paraplegic industrialist provides most of the funding for a rocketship to fly 44 survivors of the collision between Earth and a star to the star's Earth-like planet. Sub plots involve a romantic triangle between the two male leads and an astronomer's daughter, the scepticism of the scientific community, and thr rioting of those who don't make the cut to join the trip. The effects are pretty good for the time and the film is still great fun. Remade (sort of) as "Armagedon" and "Deep Impact" (the latter the superior film).
Follow Ups:
Good film effects, John Hoyt stands out in acting, Barbara Rush her
pretty self, watch for a young extra towards end of film: Stuart
Whitman! Ending could have been not so utopian-fairy-tale-like. One
of the 1950s sci-fi classics. ~AH
