If each of us composed his favorite 100 list... whose list do you think would be closest to yours?I think I know my answer, but will withold is for now.
BTW - you are allowed up to two names.

Yes, he was a nice guy, and we had some communications, but I don't remember his taste in movies.

Music is Emotion
he often mentions films he's just seen and it always reminds me of how much I enjoyed it.
Music is Emotion
I kind of agree with Grant, that not everyone has been keeping a running total in their mind as to who agrees with who....unless of course it is you Victor as we NEVER agree on anything...movies or otherwise!
I guess everyone else is checking with their lawyers and taking muscle relaxant.
In my case, I just don't think anyone has the same taste as I do in movies (bad or good as some may see it).
-I like Clint Eastwood alot, but couldn't watch his Bridges movie.
-Never seen a Tarantino film that I could watch again (or not grimice through the first time for that matter).
-Like sci-fi's, actions and comedies in general, even cheesy ones at times
-Don't generally like romance films
-Do not watch gore or even horror films
-Not big on gangster films
-Never seen any of "the classics" such as "Gone with the wind" or "Casablanca". Not sure if I ever will.
-Can't watch musicals (other than The Sound of Music).
-Don't generally like foreign films, cult films or similar
-Don't like most westerns (especially those with John Wayne)
So, anybody else like me? Nah, probably not. :)
What DO you like?
Nothing necessarily in order, all off the top of my head. Probably missing lots.
Comedians:
Mike Myers, Jim Carey, Leslie Nielson, Will Smith, Adam Sandler, Danny Devito sometimes, others I am no doubt missing.
TV:
Mainly reality shows. Lots of them. Big Brother, Survivor, etc. Used to like CSI Miami but couldn't handle David Caruso anymore. Still like the original. Some home type shows (reno shows, etc)...
General:
Clint Eastwood, Arny to some degree (get's tiring), Denzel, Chris Walken, James Woods a few years back, Steve McQueen, Julia Roberts, Bruce Willis is OK most of the time (whatdyu talkin bout Willis), Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Sean Penn, Ed Harris, Jodie Foster, Harrison Ford in most (although some of his movies are a bit over-rated IMO). Rachel McAdams, Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayak and Jessica Alba come to mind for actresses I like... to see. :)
Films I like vary from action, comedy etc as noted before. I don't watch movies to pick apart acting skills, etc. I do notice however if an actor over-acts their role or plays it poorly and it does affect the movie experience if it is so. I watch movies (the same as I listen to music) purely for the entertainment/enjoyment. Hence why I don't watch horror / gore / Tarantino type films. I don't find these types of movies entertaining.
I agree with that!
Clint's westerns like Unforgiven and Pale Rider OK but anything with "emotions" + Clint Eastwood=Cringe. Musicals, never.Foreign films i love. The fact that i am unfamiliar with the language is a challenge i enjoy. Its as good a means as any to begin to learn another language.I've recently watched a few Bergman films. The Virgin Spring most recently then Persona and The Seventh Seal, I just watched the original Solaris tonight, The Saragossa Manuscript of course and then some in French.Watching films in a language of which i posses no present understanding is kind of like driving without brakes in a way without the risk. Its interesting to arrive at an internal understanding of the matters which can be common to all people related through an unfamiliar culture and language. This serves to allow one a knowledge of greater value or a more truly meaningful dimension of these things when understanding is arrived at thru the filter of a foreign language. It certainly engenders in me a great appreciation for and admiration of people i know who's native language is one in which i am as yet still uneducated yet who speak mine with ease. What other films do you regard as "Classic" you have left unwatched?Ben Hur?The Third Man? Is that really a classic?I think i agree that wild popularity in most things of a cultural nature often equates for me to shallow depth of value.I am with you on Gore anything that uses extreme amounts of blood and violence can pass right into the rubbish like Reservoir Dogs and any slasher junk like Saw and Texas Chainsaw etc ad museum.Glad to say Romance films require me to be chained to the seat to watch.Gangster films thankfully aren't much in style unless the Oceans 11 etc are in there.I can do without the glorification of the criminal mentality thank you very much.Movies that ask meaningfull questions and don't pretend to answer them if there is no clear answer but can let reality be uncertain win for me. Life is enigmatic, no? I frequently have no satisfactory answers for important questions.Like today I saw an interview Neil Cavuto did with Valdimir Zhiranovski who a few years ago was being demonized as a very serious threat to "peace" for his ultra nationalistic speeches yet today i found him smiling and somehow reasonable and felt much goodwill toward him and what can explain this other than maybe people who once found themselves far apart and in conflict can actually grow and see the mutual benefit of common understanding and cooperation outweighing the lower impulse to conquer and defeat for survival. It has some weird meaning to me as i have a theory Russia is responsible for my existence in that my parents conceived me during the so called Cuban Missile Crisis ,i believe in a state of reckless abandon when the thought of imminent cataclysmic annihilation gripped them.Seeing a warming and genuine impulse for good will between the two former adversaries is to me a truly beautifull thing i hope can flower to an abiding fruit which nourishes us all.I think i could survive with your list.So you and Victor for now.
... or do you simply expect a Diebold affirmation sans paper trail? ;^)I haven't composed such a list nor am I inclined to do so, but if I were to list my Top 100 favorite films, nearly 50% would probably come from this list, which is a consensus voted by true film lovers (without regard to a film's country of origin or predisposed to prejudices favoring mostly contemporary films):
FYI, 20 on that list are in my collection and mI have seen a number of the others.
Have you heard about the upcoming Flicker Alley release of Murnau's Phantom and the Criterion release of Pabst's Pandora's Box (w/Louise Brooks)?Cheers,
AuPh
Ni but I will keep my eye peeled.
Sheesh... I can see you in the restaurant... "If I order wrong... with the whole room laugh at me, throw food?"How about I make it easier for you - it ain't gonna be you and I!
;^)
It is easier to say who it wouldn't be. Maybe we should just take off the gloves and pick our opposites.
silent films are, and yet a worshipper of just about any Fx crapola.
No insult meant, auph, but you must have at least a dual-personality!
Most of those FX type of films I appreciate are well done and story/character driven or I don't add them to my DVD collection. Some of the films I enjoy are admittedly guilty pleasure material (serials, Jet Li martial arts, 50's SF, old filmed & kinoscoped TV series and classic rock video for instance), but finding that rare curiosity is part of the FUN aspect of collecting, is it not? However, if by 'dual-personality' you mean that having rather diverse tastes in cinema makes one's interests appear unfocused, perhaps even slap-dash, then I plea nolo contendere; it's bound to happen in the course of amassing a sizeable film collection. BTW, our DVD library is rapidly approaching 1000 films, TV series & music videos (YIKES!), so I guess you could say that my wife & I are a bit obsessive/compulsive about our video collecting/watching habits.
FTR, the only thing I try to avoid is European schlock films (soapy, pretentious crap, which I tend to call Grey Poupon). Note: There is GOOD European cinema, but I draw the line at abstract storytelling and vague symbolism, so even some of films considered to be "classics" by the critical elite don't appeal to me in the slightest.
