Poor Malcolm McDowell doomed to always play enraged, homicidal psychos--but, hell, he does it so well I would never be his neighbor.Malcky does it really down and dirty here recreating the character of Russia's, and perhaps the world's, most prolific serial killler. Portrayed as a very sick man with some powers of hypnotism, "Evilenko" managed to defile, murder, and cannabalize 55 boys and girls in his reign of terror around Kiev and the surrounding country.
The movie starts out dreadfully but gets a terrific second breath after about 25 minutes and becomes engrossing as we see the local magistrate endevour to find the "Monster of Rostov".
If you are a crime junkie this is a good watch. Not too very graphic but a tad unsettling here and there.
Follow Ups:
Recently watched a documentary on Andrei Chikatilo. As disturbing as his crimes are, to me what is as upsetting is how remote, distant and isolated human beings can be from one another even while they live in day to day intimate contact with one another as neighbors and coworkers that things like this go on unnoticed for so long.. The cannibal is dead from a bullet to the head but the darkness still abides in us, the normal people.
