A group of peasant farmers have their land stripped from them through a crooked bureaucratic scheme and violently set out to reclaim their ancestral farms.
Unlike any film you've seen, a truly unique vision: shot to resemble a very old film yet using modern sensibilities in acting, i.e. naturalism w/out trace of a false note.
This film not only looks like no other one, the directors narrative technique is to cut from one scene to mid-or-post action in another: the viewer feels propelled along into events without time fully to catch his breath. It also rivets attention upon the scene, forcing you to pay rapt attention in order not to miss one critical act.
The cinematography is edgy and the soundtrack oddly traditional: a recurrent and haunting melody.
Russian film is in good hands these days.
Follow Ups:
Quite and experience, heh? That sadist guy emerging from the basement was something...Did it remind you of the Dovzhenko's Earth?
I wasn't impressed with Dov's "Arsenal" but I'll get to earth soon.
You have to learn them to become... ahem... educated... but it is not too exciting.
