David Cronenberg directed this film, which I think should be calle , "A History of...". It certainly IS violent and also sexually wxplicit. Viggo Mortensen is a mild mannered owner/operator of a diner/restaurant in a small Indiana town. One night two pathological killers stop in and try to ake over. Mortensen stuns the small group of employees and customers by killing the two in a battle which clearly shows he has had training in this activity. Media noteriety ensues because of his heroism and soon some mob guys show up in town thinking he has a mob past in Philadelphia. Our hero eventually dispatches these guys also. But wiat, there's more. Along thew wau Viggos'wife and son are endangered and the local sherrif begins to supect that Mortenson has more of a past than he has let on. Ed Harris and William Hurt are in the well chosen cast. I enjoyed this one but all in all there isn't much to it other than spectacular gun fights and quite open sex.
Follow Ups:
I liked both. HOV is a very nice movie though I find American Gun more thoughtful with a clearer message. Forrest Whitaker is brilliant as always, infact the whole cast was pretty amazing..!AP
# The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men # Samuel L. Jackson (Ezekiel 25:17)> Pulp Fiction < Current Set-Up..Plinius CD101-> M8-> SA-REF-> Genesis IM-8300 <-
vicious killers are just like the rest of us.
They're not.
There was no "message" to the film. It told a decent yarn. Fact is, while murderers may not be "like us", they often do come from the general population of us humans. His neighbors did not know he was a killer. Sort of like the Son of Sam. Think his neighbors what evil lurked within him? Which makes finding them so often very difficult. They do not stand out.
that was way over rated (movie of the year etc.) I found it easy to watch with nice dialogue and story but predictable and somewhat ordinary and unbelievable. Better for the casual movie watcher rather than the movie critic in all of us...
We are in agreement. I thought the very sudden explosion of violence that always managed to take me by surprise (even though I was expecting it) made the movie more than just a sum of it's parts.Ed HArris and WIlliam Hurt, although a bit over the top, were excellent.
