This 1995 Merchant Ivory film takes what could have been a good stoty and plods it down with uninteresting characters we really don't care about. In 19th century rural England a young woman self delivers a a stillborn ilegitimate baby and then somehow staggers to a nearby village where she is taken in by a family. The group consists of the mother and father and three grown sons, a soldier, a cobbler, and a somewhat slow youngest son. Of course the lads become smitten with her and rivalries develop. Along the way she runs into the man who impregnayed her and lied to her and determines that he is doing the same thing to another young thing. The heroine accepts the proposal of the youngest son to the surprose of the family (and us). In the end the son and the liar tilt but by then we just don't care.
Follow Ups:
this movie is not an MERCHANT and IVORY movie since IVORY did not direct this movie and was only executive produced by MERCHANT.
Merchant Ivory was one of the production companies involved in the production. Rico is therefore correct. He did not assert that either Ismail Merchant or James Ivory was personally involved. Imagine Entertainment produces many films for which Ron Howard is not personally involved.
I know that but the film titles start with a banner saying "A Merchant Ivory Film'. So if they call it that I think I can.
IMDB lists "Merchant Ivory" as one of the production companies.
