Without regard for the quality of the movies themselves (although all are just fine) here are my current picks for best DVD sound in a surround sound home theater environment:1. "Master and Commander" (DTS option)
2. "E.T., The Extraterrestrial" (20th Anniversary John Williams
live option).3. "Saving Private Ryan" (DTS option).
4. "Apocalypse Now Redux".
5. "The Bridges of Madison County) (Unfortunately only available in so called "full screen" format but the laserdisc Dolby Digital has has even better sound and is letterbioxed).
6. "The Flight of the Phoenix" (remake).
Follow Ups:
Most DTS soundtracks are pretty decent. I managed to make an amp shut down trying to play "The Haunting" DTS demo disk; that was before I figured out no matter how big my main speakers were, I needed a sub.
Yes, I always choose DTS. The only DVD I have where the Dolby is better (sweeter, less "mechanical", more live) is the alternate track on "E.T." which features a live orchestral recording of the John Williams score conducted by the composer (my #2 choice above).
I meant to include the entire 10 episodes of "Band of Brothers" whose DTS sound is just amazing.
