Saw it last night and just couldn't believe how Netflix rents movies like used cars . . . "classic horror film". Don't tell me you paid to see that in the motherland. If one had taken a four-way hit of acid it might be that but otherwise this is perfect for Mystery Science Theatre.Actually, based on the preveiws for Amphibian Man, this was made with MST in mind. (And as silly as it looked it was made in the early 80's.)
Well, tonight is Gloomy Sunday followed by tinman's Rublev.
Follow Ups:
Too tired to wax poetic about anything at the moment, so you are safe.
As a matter of fact, the bonus stuff had a 15 minute biography of Gogol's life.
I remember that one vaguely, but the lead is a very good actor, and the girl is pretty. But I suspect this is not a movie for an American.
and, of course, the cultural differences of the markets of the time play into it. Most movies do not play well after its time.
And given the cultural differences, only those films dealing with common human emotions translate well - taken from that perspective Viy was doomed from the start, I wonder why they even bothered releasing it here. Unless you have good feel for the Russian culture and Gogol's work it is bound to irritate you.I will probably add it to my Netflix queue.
