Let's hope Russia is still not like this but I fear the worst . . .We start out with a scene that struck Greenaway chords with stray dogs being restless then propelled into flight by the hammering of man made machines . .
Then we follow the activities of three different people who all stumble into the same "after midnight" bar for night caps. There they begin to talk, then each makes up some wild, but believable, tale about who and what they are. The most interesting being the story of cloning with "4" being the best result . . .
After the bar scene, we digress into the worlds of each of the bar players. One taking a train to bury a friend which is a nightmare in slow motion. The grotesgue nature of country people and their customs are disturbing. Not that they are necessarily perverse as antiquated and crude. (This particular story goes on seemingly forever.)
The movie is two hours long and seems four. Those film folks from Russia, et al, really know how to make time stand still. (A noted fascination with walking--as with Bella Tar).
