  I don't know that I've "covered" it but I have seen it many times and must have posted or been part of a thread on it, maybe more than once. It is also a favorite of mine. That sequence at the end where the train is coming is incredibly suspenseful and never fails to cause me to hold my breath. The train wreck is the best since Keaton's "The General" 30 years before. I have always felt that Brando's "The horror, the horror." at the end of "Apocalypse Now" is intended to mirror the doctor's "Madness! Madness!" at the end of "...Kwai".

    while the "The horror, the horror..." could well mirror the closing in"...Kwai", there is no doubt the Kurtz'z last words were taken directly from joseph conrads "The Heart of Darkness",on which the film was loosely based and from which the name of brando's character was taken.

        damn--- i read the book so very long ago (1965). i thought it was at the end of the novella. that being said, check out the wikipedia entry on the film. alsothe epigram for The Wasteland, by TS Eliot, which is read by Kurtz in the film.

        Farom the Wikipedia article: "Willard enters Kurtz's chamber during one of his message recordings, and kills him with a machete. Lying bloody and dying on the ground, Kurtz whispers "The horror... the horror." (This line is taken directly from Conrad's novella.)"

        I wish i coudld lead you directly to the quote in the novella, but......

          Yes , that's what Wikpedia says but I searched the STORY on line and there is only one use of the word "horror" early in the story and it is singular. I also skimmed the story and did not find it. I'd hate to have the wade through it again to prove my point.
