I might suggest Sean Penn. I also realise I am sticking with Americans, but I am going to nominate Dennis Franz although he is almost exclusively on the small screen.
Follow Ups:
Big Jack wasn't "throwing it away" in "The Departed."
Larry
Chris Cooper.
Dunno if Al Pacino gave it away as well..but he's still there and better than ever as he matures. Sean Penn, while not a favourite, did a really magnificent performance in Carlito's Way and more believable than in Mystic River, IMHO.Clive Owen, Johnny Depp, Kevin Spacey, Kevin Bacon, Christian Slater are all great candidates for 'best actors'..
I liked Eric Lively in 'Butterfly Effect 2'..this guy has great potential and did a great performance in that movie..
JMO..:)
