on the big screen. DOC at University of Chicago is having a month of Jazz themed movies.I've been wanting to see this for years, and it was nice to see it on the big screen. The print was a little ratty, and for the 1st 15 minutes the music wasn't quite synched up, so Dexter Gordon sounded like he was playing under water. Luckly, the projectionist was able to get it together and the film was quite enjoyable.
Aside from the music (which is great) the story is allowed to unfold at a very deliberate pace. No rush, no hurry, no car chases. All-in-all, a very engrossing piece of story telling. Just a smige too long, but maybe I was suffering from the late 9 pm. start time.
When I get home tonight I'm going to pull out the LP of the soundtrack and give it a spin.
Follow Ups:
Oh yeah.....This is the one to see if you've any feel for mid-20th century jazz and its practicioners. Dexter Gordon is so, so good in this.
n/t.
The title refers to the Monk/Williams composition "'Round Midnight" which, when lyrics were added later, became "'Round About Midnight". The Miles lp is called "'Round About Midnight" as well and vontains the classic Gil Evans composition of the Monk tune.
I saw this at a film festival in Boston in 1986 and the director, Bernard Tavernier, spoke about the film and what it was like to work with Dex. Gordon's character is believed to be an amalgam of saxophonist Lester Young and bop pianist Bud Powell. I particularly appreciated th use of actual jazz musicians in some of the roles. And, as you point out, the music is just superb.
and is such a great natural actor it makes me wonder why he wasn't in more filmsMusic: Dexter Gordon Blows Hot and Cool, Our Man in Paris, Two Flights Up
Jazz films/documentaries:
Straight, No Chaser, Thelonious Monk
Let's Get Lost, Chet Baker
Portrait of a Jazz Survivor,Art Pepper
You really suggest some great Jazz docs Grin!
"Portrait of a Jazz Survivor" was so well done, I had insights into the complex Pepper character that I didn't get reading his dark but wonderful autobiography "The Straight Life".
is playing at DOC in a few weeks. I'm going to try to get there.
This has never come out on laserdisc or DVD and the VHS tape is out of print and obscenely overpriced as well. Too bad, as it is a great documantery on Chettie. I saw it once at the Brattle theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
tho' it's rare; Nippon Columbia, a 1988 release
Thanks. I'll search for it. Funny how I missed it because it is at or near the top of my wish list. Thanks very much.
Grins
