Is it my imagination, or did Cohen come out of nowhere with this movie. Was he any kind of celebrity before this movie? It seems to me he went from perfect obscurity to worldwide movie tsumani rather suddently. I remember seeing his face first on Yahoo's Most Popular Photos page weeks before the movie was released, and thinking, "Who the heck is this guy?" His face popped up again on the same site, once or twice thereafter, I think. Then, all of a sudden, he's on the national morning network shows and is being featured in full page ads in every newspaper as a great comedic phenomenon. Does this guy have any kind of show biz history? Or did a few of his buddies e-mail his photo back and forth until it started to show up on Yahoo's Most Popular? Excuse my ignorance, if I'm wrong. But I remember a very clever and highly successful such campaign for the "Blair Witch Project." Can anyone fill me in?
Follow Ups:
He's been a wildly successful character in England with his "Ali G" character. It's played here on HBO to fairly small audiences for a few years. His main persona's are Borat, Ali G (the hip British rap musician/interviewer who asks outrageous question of unsuspecting celebrities) and Bruno, the ove- the-top gay fashion diva. The guy is genuinely hillarious in all these roles and I would happily go to see a full length movie on both of his other two characters.
Thanks for the fill-in and forgive my ignorance. I was still astounded by the incredibly well-orchestrated promotion campaign surrounding this film, and whether some of the "news" spots that seemed to pop up in advance of it were not really "news."By the way, was he the guy who "interviews" Shaquile O'Neil in that NBA commercial a year or two ago? -- at least, I think it was an NBA commercial.
