Whether the correct history is that they just happened on the sub by accident is irrelevant. In the movie, it's discovered by an intercepted radio transmission!

How did the Allies decode the intercepted radio message of the German subs location? If they could decode that transmission in the first place, why would they need to take such risks to retreive that decoder on the sub?

Stupid plot.
