'Nother DVD that I purchased without first seeing it. Liked it very much, suspect that it'll improve upon subsequent viewings (the hallmark of every truly good film, I imagine), and consider it to be one of the more outstanding releases of a truly weak year-in-film. To be sure, it's got some Cameron Crowe schmaltz in places (he makes unabashedly feel-good movies, doesn't he?), but is for the most part leavened by virtue of a truly pathetic and decidedly non-saccharine core (the film's got growing pains, and experiences the good with the bad).Cast performances are first-class all around; in particular, the young lad who plays William Miller (aka, Cameron Crowe) -- Patrick Fugit -- is excellent. And Phillip Seymour Hoffman kicks serious ass as rock critic Lester Bangs, to boot! And -- oh yes -- Mmmmm, Kate Hudson!
Choice feel-good-but-still-not-*quite*-treacly moment: A bus full of bedraggled rockstars, groupies, roadies and associated hangers-on singing a lulling collective rendition of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer."
Great soundtrack, by the way: I had fun trying to identify all of the tunes.
What do all y'all think?
Follow Ups:
and it was great!Wonderful music, and the scene with the records under the bed... I thought, my God! that's my record collection! (Back then)
I would recommend it to anyone. And yes, Kate Hudson, yummy, but since I'm an old fart all I could think of is how much she looks like her mom. And what hots I had for her mom back then.
I just saw it last night and loved it!
I also liked the bits with the Rolling Stone editors and how freakin' seriously they were taking themsleves. "They have a Mojo there. It can send an entire page over the phone in ONLY 18 minutes!"
Dan "The Golden God!"
I was a rock reviewer in the 70s...this flick brought back a lot of memories. I truly enjoyed it, little frissons of recognition every 10 minutes throughout the film. How great that in a year of dreadful movies, Cameron Crowe made a fine and entertaining picture about coming of age and the redemptive power of art.
Yes, a wonderful movie. Rented the DVD and didn't return it for the full five days, then went right out and bought it! My wife actually learned how to use the DVD player so she could watch this movie!!! It is in heavy rotation in the DVD player along with High Fidelity.D.C.E.
Did anyone else experience a slight and wonderful chill during the scene in which the young William Miller discovered the treasure trove of LPs (**Pet Sounds**, **Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out**, **Axis Bold as Love**, **Tommy** & etc.) that his sister had hidden for him under his bed? God, what a great and almost mystical cinematic moment!

AF was right up at the top of my favorites for the year list. Don't think I had more fun at the movies last year (excpet maybe for watching Willy Dafoe chew the scenery as Nosferatu in "Shadow of the Vampire").Treacly feel good movie? Perhaps, but I like to feel good. The Tiny Dancer scene *was* too calculated for my taste, but I loved the turbulent flight scene and thought that it more than made up for it!
Easily the best movie about the rock roadlife ever made.
I saw it three weeks ago, on its last appearance on the big screen -- which is the only way really to see a movie. Yeah, lotsa great scenes. And I can't believe that Kate Hunter or Billy Crudup could actually be anyone else but who they were in the movie. For a very informative writeup, go to bigstar.com -- there's stuff I, an avid reader, had never heard before.

Long live Analog!
I just watched this movie tonight and I must say that it is one of the best movies i've seen in a dogs age. I have been getting so discouraged at the state of the movies these days that I lost hope. This movie, like you say is a feel good movie. The music is great, it has a story that makes sense. It puts me back to my younger days when I too would have loved to tour with a band on the road.4/5
