I was looking for information about Pixar's next release, and came across this interesting entry in Wikipedia:

It's Disney's old 2D animation system, since ditched in favor of 3D workstations. There are some interesting bits, like the fact the resolution captured is higher than HDTV, and the digital 2d format allows for re-rendering to higher resolutions and/or aspect ratios (like the Imax versions of Beauty & The Beast)

It looks like Lasseter is ressurecting Disney's 2D animation department, and revamping this system.
