Just received in the mail a DVD, directors Cut of Suspiria. Bought it on Ebay.I experienced the film with bose full surround sound and a 56-inch Hitachi (16-9 windscreen). Before watching the film I ran the contrast, brightness, hew-saturation, color tests, and dialed it. These video tests come with the cd.
The film is very interesting with its very vibrant and deep pastel colors. The image wrapped around the goblins soundtrack was truly more disturbing than what I remembered.
This film is not for the faint of heart. There are some truly disturbing murder scenes. How Argento was able to capture the dog taking multiple stringy bites of flesh out of the blind mans neck was a worthy but grotesque mention.
One scene showed a woman falling into a small room full of what appeared to be military style tangled razor wire. She was only making things worst by screaming for her life and falling deeper into it. Then out of nowhere a gloved hand comes out and cuts her throat. Argento must have used parts of a pig to cut into in order to create a scene that looked very realistic.
Of the murder scenes the most frightening was the first one. A woman feels a presence outside her window. She's in a bathroom shaking with fear. Looking out the dark windy night through her reflective bathroom window she sees two evil eyes glowing looking back at her. Next a hand breaks through the glass and pulls her outside, stabbing her multiple times, you see her beating heart, and then the thing stabs her again (her beating heart). Next this beast ties a phone cord around her neck tosses her through a stained glass ceiling, killing another girl watching from below. She dies by a large piece of glass falling and slicing into her head.
I tell you... I don’t know who's more disturbed... Me who watched this film, or the one who thought this stuff up in their head(s)
This film has some strange lines from the actors, some parts could easily make a midnight movie crowd bust out with laughter, but the other parts would quite them down in a hurry. If you like fascinating color with horrific horror and a 70’s feel, than check it out
Follow Ups:
I like Susperia, but my personal favourite is Profondo Rosso (Deep Red). Great stuff. Certainly not a splatter flick - only a couple stabbings from memeory - however, Argento's camera work and the Goblins sound track are very special.
Have not seen Deep Red. I have a couple Argento films here but they are on Lazor Disc and I dont have a player :(Two Evil Eyes
The Stendhal Syndrome
Bird with the Crystal Plumage
and Deamons.Found all them at a garrage sale but have not viewed them. Except Deamons on vhs some time back.
Tenebrae and Phenomena are also very much worth finding.Tenebrae is quite scary and has a very twisted plot - close to the quality of Deep Red.
Phenomena is not such a good film but is worth looking out for 2 reasons. 1. A very young and pretty Jennifer Connelly,
2. An awesome tracking shot as the opener which is somehow shot continuously over a field, over a roof, down the wall, in a window, into a bedroom, down the stairs, in another room, out another window.
His version trims cuts and replaces the music track with the Goblins. Dawn of the Dead is my favorite horror film and Romero and Argento are best of friends. In fact Argento's Daughter is the main girl in Land of the Dead -- and there are some wonderful "oh now that is just disgusting scenes such as:
Spoiler
The bit where the zombie reaches down a guys mouth to pull out his insides. Romero's films are usually social commentaries disguised as horror films and he infuses them with humour (except Night of the Living Dead)
I have seen this but didnt know that Argento had anything to do with it. I dont think I saw the directors cut either.
Interesting movie, very good atmosphere. From what i've heard, this may be his *least* gorey movie. Italian horror is not for those with a weak stomach.

Yes, very good atmosphere!Interesting that this may be his least gorey movie! But thinking about it I believe your right, but havnt seen all his stuff,
in your header, v-man.
You risk ruining this blood epic for the uninitiated.

Argento used Kodak film stock that had date expired and then had it pushed in the development process to get those unworldly colors
And some odd stuff done with resized interior doors to alter perspective too
Agreed; there are mostly crummy lines and it's a silly story
I've been a fan of Suspiria since it's release; nothing Dario Argento has done since is as good
It's a Classic
I wish more people would shoot with Expired Kodak Film Stock !!First time I saw Suspiria was in 77 at the drive-in and it spooked me for years afterwards. It wasn’t till the mid 80's for the second viewing but on a very used vhs. Then a couple more times on vhs in the 90's, then one time at the midnight movies, and now here at home where it struck hard with superior quality DVD! Nice sound too.
I adore Blue Velvet, Freaks, Performance, Mulholland Drive et al. The Departed didn't seem very gory to me. Weid is fine. Obsure is fine. Even demented can be interesting. But I cannot watch this film or any of the others by this director. It's just way way too much for me. I can't do slasher flicks either.
I know Argento has many devoted fans - I just can't go there. No criticism, just not for me.
