Before a movie, our theater shows ads and trivia clips. It had one saying the most extras used in a film was for the funeral scene in Gandhi. Something like 500,000 people. I have no idea if this is correct or not.Check www.imdb.com, as their database is loaded with info.

Maybe Gandhi, but I always thought Bondarchuk's War and Peace was very populated.
I think he outdid himself in the Waterloo. I seem to remember statements to that effect.
Certainly for extras in costume.
