Great flick but who decided to speed up the fight scenes? They looked atrociously fake. You'd think with all the incorporated digital wizardry they'd find some way to fix this cinematic faux pas.If I didn't know hollywood better, I'd wonder if they wanted to make sure it looked poor so as to play down these scenes.
The videotape was so bad, I thought it was a DVD. Don't tell me they're videotaping DVD artifacts & all.
That reminds me, I thought it was great that Stargate SG1 seres was playing repeats on network TV until I saw the cheap digital rebroadcast. The video quality degradation from the original pay channel made the show completely unwatchable.

Follow Ups:
It's not so much "sped up" as it is an editing effect...VERY similar to what Spielberg did in Saving Private Ryan. It gives an "immediate" and gritty quality to fight scenes.Doug Schneider
SoundStage!
I did see the lack of digital stablization in the camcorders which is something completely different. What I saw in the Gladiator VHS casette was almost claymation type motion that is indicative of DVD's strobing which necessitates 3:2 pull down.

I think what you're seeing is very much part of the editing. I remember those types of things in the film at the theater -- a kind of almost "stop-motion" effect, right?Doug Schneider

"The videotape was so bad, I thought it was a DVD."Are you saying that VHS and LD looks better than DVD? If so, I'm not sure what to say, as DVD is VASTLY superior to VHS and LD. You talk about artifacts, but even on inexpensive ($200-$300) DVD players with the worst downconversion (e.g. Toshiba) and on modestly priced ($800) 36" 4:3 sets, the artifacts are minimal compared to VHS and LD. And a progressive scan players and a 16:9 display take you to another level in video quality. You're the first person I've heard that doesn't think DVD is a huge improvement in video over VHS and LD.
I rather liked the sped-up effect of the fight scenes. Conveyed the frenetic quality that I expect such a melee would have. I thought it was a good effect.
***Great flick but who decided to speed up the fight scenes? They looked atrociously fakeEVRYTHING is "atrociously fake" about this "film". I have the DVD and its quality is good. I don't expect, however, to watch it the second time any time soon. Perhaps when I get my friend from NY for a visit, if he wants to be entertained.
Rather boring piece of shit. Cleopatra of 2000.
Did you see how disappointed its director was last night? He apparently thought he "created" something.
Yep. White mammoth...
Which US film not restricted to the nominations)would you have chosen, Victor, ( if you'd have been on the jury?
...the two finest "regular" movies last year were Almost Famous and Wonder Boys. At least each got one Oscar.clark
***Which US film not restricted to the nominations)would you have chosen, Victor, ( if you'd have been on the jury?Jeff, I have been so detached from the movie industry that last year, that I am only now starting to do some catching up - my wife is trying to get me go see the Traffic (which I am not so hot about). I am not even sure I have been to the movie theater that past year at all - watching VHS tapes more than compensated for it, given the shortage of time.
So the Gladiator very well may be the only US film that I have seen lately. Generally, if I am one year behind the curve, I think I missed nothing.
But I have to tell you that watching the Oscars last night, and some clips there, made me want to see some of them.
Which ones did you like?
This weekend I finally got to see "All About my Mother" and it is a treat - especially visually, if you use good progressive scan macnine, the quality is superb, and I am not even going to waste your time telling you it is good film - I am sure you have already seen it.
Also - the "Best Intentions" - a must for any Bergman lover, even if not comparable to his films overall.
Traffic...go see it Victor. I thought it was FABULOUS and easily should have won over Gladiator.Gladiator won two awards that were truly a joke: Best Picture, and als also Best Special Effects. Watch that film *closely* in the theater. Not very realistic at all.

***Traffic...go see it Victor. I thought it was FABULOUS and easily should have won over Gladiator. That will take some forcing. I used to like Michael, but he is getting too much, with his urine going into his head. But the hardest part - taking his bimbo.
I agree on those "special" effects - I found them mostly annoying and way too obvious. But I do see the value in film like that for kids (even some grown up kids...) - it IS entertaining to some degree. It is just that it should not be taken for anything serious.
Did you see how the producers went out of their ways to soften the blow to Scott? He is not one happy man...
You MUST really see Traffic. I truly believe you will enjoy it.Regarding Scott, he's not churning out the material like he used to. His talent is apparent, but he's appearing asleep at the wheel these days.
The Best Picture Oscar went to the wrong picture, but the Best Director award certainly went to the right person.

Victor, there wasn't much that inspired me amongst the nominations and very few US films last year that stood out for me - I did like The Yards, sombre & well paced, also the quirky Falls Brothers, as well as Sophie Coppola's Virgin Suicides. Yes, I saw "All About my Mother", quite a serious film for Amoldavar - liked it very much.
There's Jean Jacque Arnaud's Stalingrad here now (France) but it seems to be rather bloated and characterless so I didn't check it out.
so that I could fast forward through all the boring scenes. Only got to see about half the picture. This was one of the "corniest" movies I've seen in a long time. How it even got nominated for an Academy Award is beyond me.
It just won for Best Picture. Shudder. I thought it a fun movie when I first saw it, but -- with a Best Picture absurdity under its belt -- I don't know that I can watch it again. Blah.

& I have learned not to watch a DVD. The artifacts are just too numerous to mention.

It was touted as a working Denon. It was everything save the 12 bit video DAC. It only has the standard 10 bit. So, I expect to still view banding, but the DVDO progressive 3-D scan ... with 3:2 pull down ability & detection. So, it solves most of my concerns save the fact my year old EAD pre/pro isn't upto the task, nor is the upgrade a valid solution, IMHO.

> > learned not to watch a DVD. The artifacts are just too numerous to mention. < <?????....there is typically far less artifacts on DVD (and typically better video) than LD offers. It sounds like you haven't seen DVD being displayed at it's best.
Peace
the $½-2k units I've seen were distractingly poor. They looked like GIF files through a bad satellite feed.

That's too bad that the players you've seen in that price range have been so poor. Believe me when I tell you that I have seen quite a few DVD players in that price range that have none of those artifacts you refer too. For example, the Pioneer DVD-37, Sony 9000ES, Toshiba 6200 and 9200. All of these players properly setup into a good (properly setup) progressive capable display provide great images. You must have seen poor setups for your demos. Maybe you saw an interlaced output being linedoubled without 3:2 pulldown (that'll cause artifacts). Regardless, you should give the above mentioned players another shot, 'cause I don't think you saw what these players are capable of. If you were in the Boulder, CO area, I'd be able to show firsthand how well a Tosh 9200 looks going through a Key Digital tranducer into the RGBHV input of a Loewe Planus...stunning. All we are saying....Is give DVD a chance...sorry, couldn't resist...;-)Peace,
Chuck
Just to add that even the entry level Pioneer DV333 is far better than any VHS player. After owning an LD and top flight VHS models players and now a DVD machine...I see no valid argument for artifact problems...although some discs themselves have some of these that were not evident on LD. For examle the English Patient on LD is much better than the DVD print...and I'm not convinced by those that say that Jaws is better on DVD. The DVD of of Jaws has a darker tint...that however does not make it better, indeed on some sequences it seems washed out. However, the new Terminator 2 edition is as good, if not better, on the $300.00 DVD33 player than the top of the line Pioneer Elite LD player of just 2 years ago...the model # escapes me.
The artifacts, fuzz, and lack of widescreen should hopefully very soon eliminated those clunky VHS tapes.
