As said below, in some ways this is a visionary work of art. The insertion of the viewer into another world, albeit one that is also recognizably human, is truly spectacular. Both the world of the first tribe and the world of the Mayans are rendered with brilliance in every aspect- cinematography, the language, the dress, the activities of the daily life.Unfortunately about 1/2 way through this movie starts to rely on the creakiest of plot devices - the deus ex machina. And there are too many such moments. In particular:
the miracle of the eclipse
the miracle of the jaguar
the melodramatic birth in the midst of an already melodramatic crisis
the return to save the wife with seconds to spare
yelling over the noise of a waterfall and being heard at the top
pulling the spear out of the chest (it's gone all the way through to the other side) and going on at full speedI thoroughly enjoyed this movie. But I wish it had not pulled me out of the movie world so often with eye-rolling moments such as above.
If the plot itself and the chase had risen to the artistry of the setting, this would indeed be a classic. It still is, in many ways. But it's flawed.
Follow Ups:
Isn't there a quicksand scene in EVERY jungle adventure flick.
Add to the various wounds the two day forced march with no food and water. That surely would have sapped the energy levels. Still, warts and all, a success.
I saw Gibson interviewed by S. Hannity last week. Gibson looked to me like an emotional wreck close to a breakdown. Even though Hannity was being sickeningly patronizing, Gibson appeared very uncomfortable and agitated.
both the Jaguar scene and the eclipse scene were completely unrealistic on top of being unlikely. An eclipse from start to finish takes about an hour. How far do you think you could get running from a jaguar starting from a tree? and technically the jaguar scene was a mess. Real jaguar in tree cut to lion painted black for the chase cut to really bad jaguar puppet for the attack. i did like this movie but your list does cut to it's problems. Some of them.
It should have been trimmed down a bit:What are the chances of a friendly eclipse happening when it did? Leave the Jaguar.
Pulling the spear out and continuing on at full-speed. (I mentioned that in my comments as well.) Admittedly, these guys were in shape but to take such and beating and still have the stamina is over the top. He should have been "grazed" or not wounded at all as he already had a full plate.
To me, the excesses of the second half still don't dim the beauty and wonder for the first half.
