***Which US film not restricted to the nominations)would you have chosen, Victor, ( if you'd have been on the jury?Jeff, I have been so detached from the movie industry that last year, that I am only now starting to do some catching up - my wife is trying to get me go see the Traffic (which I am not so hot about). I am not even sure I have been to the movie theater that past year at all - watching VHS tapes more than compensated for it, given the shortage of time.
So the Gladiator very well may be the only US film that I have seen lately. Generally, if I am one year behind the curve, I think I missed nothing.
But I have to tell you that watching the Oscars last night, and some clips there, made me want to see some of them.
Which ones did you like?
This weekend I finally got to see "All About my Mother" and it is a treat - especially visually, if you use good progressive scan macnine, the quality is superb, and I am not even going to waste your time telling you it is good film - I am sure you have already seen it.
Also - the "Best Intentions" - a must for any Bergman lover, even if not comparable to his films overall.
Follow Ups:
Traffic...go see it Victor. I thought it was FABULOUS and easily should have won over Gladiator.Gladiator won two awards that were truly a joke: Best Picture, and als also Best Special Effects. Watch that film *closely* in the theater. Not very realistic at all.

***Traffic...go see it Victor. I thought it was FABULOUS and easily should have won over Gladiator. That will take some forcing. I used to like Michael, but he is getting too much, with his urine going into his head. But the hardest part - taking his bimbo.
I agree on those "special" effects - I found them mostly annoying and way too obvious. But I do see the value in film like that for kids (even some grown up kids...) - it IS entertaining to some degree. It is just that it should not be taken for anything serious.
Did you see how the producers went out of their ways to soften the blow to Scott? He is not one happy man...
You MUST really see Traffic. I truly believe you will enjoy it.Regarding Scott, he's not churning out the material like he used to. His talent is apparent, but he's appearing asleep at the wheel these days.
The Best Picture Oscar went to the wrong picture, but the Best Director award certainly went to the right person.

Victor, there wasn't much that inspired me amongst the nominations and very few US films last year that stood out for me - I did like The Yards, sombre & well paced, also the quirky Falls Brothers, as well as Sophie Coppola's Virgin Suicides. Yes, I saw "All About my Mother", quite a serious film for Amoldavar - liked it very much.
There's Jean Jacque Arnaud's Stalingrad here now (France) but it seems to be rather bloated and characterless so I didn't check it out.
