Some people here liked it, and since it was on a free cable, I stayed tuned.I should have switched the second the first ugly notes hit my ears.
The film is weak in every respect, it is formulaic in the extreme, shallow, tedious, the "I've already seen that 1000 times before" phrase doesn't even begin to describe it.
Did I say it was a monumental waste of time?

That's what my stepdaughter told me when she forced me to sit down and watch this film: "What 'The Graduate' and 'Easy Rider' are to the Sixties and 'The Godfather' and 'Cabaret' are to the early Seventies, THIS is the film of my generation!"Two hours later I looked at her and said, "You actually need to see some of those earlier 'films of a generation' like 'The Godfather' or 'The Graduate' before you compare them to something like this!!"
As tinear said, the only way this film has meaning is if you watch it with a young babe who says, "Isn't it great! It's the film of my generation!" and you smile and laugh with her and say, "Boy, it sure is! What meaning! Let's go back to my place and talk about it some more!"
You were right to say what you did.My daughter, when she was around 12, claimed Michael Jackson was their generation's Mozart. She is smarter now.
everything else coming out of Hollywood is so bad, this one looks pretty good in comparison?I saw it --- thought it was OK, but nothing special. A lot of people I know did like it, but they are comparing it to the usual dreck they see over and over again at the multiplex. When the choice is between this and The Dukes of Hazzard, Garden State is an all-time classic.

Me. too.
I'm almost too old. I saw it in the theater and it struck me as poorly acted, poorly written and cliche filled but several people who's opinions I generally trust really liked it so I wound up seeing it again at home almost a year later and I saw it differently. I felt like there was SOMETHING there. Something at its core that I wound up connecting to. It certainly wasn't a great movie but I felt like I understood why so many people liked it.
If I were to look for "something" in every pile of crap, I would miss on many great films in the meantime.
...endless debates about creationism on Outside, you certainly have the time for a cute little film a lot of people found charming.
When I checked Outside, I got as far as a long debate on the reality of God.Yeah, that's productive.
I remembered why I ignore Outside. Never got to creationism.
***Life's too short for debating on Outside. But apparently not too short to bring it here.
You shouldn't.
himself (a subconscious ploy to get to the babe) that it had "meaning."
I saw this a few weeks back. All the warning signs were there early, but I decided to stick it out. Nothing in this movie makes any sense, or is even remotely believable. Lots of "weird for the sake of weird" stuff. Grrrrrr!!!!!
