For me the character was sort of a cheap SNL impression of LittleRichard/Jamees Brown. When he was in decline I saw no depth of emotion. Just low key line reading/hitting the marks type acting. What am I missing? i saw no complexity, humanity or anything there.
Follow Ups:
there was the drug situation and the somewhat clumsy subplot about him trying to do his own kind of music...but this is a musical and I thought he shone brightly in his musical numbers. More than an impression for me, I thought he nailed them and they were the high points of the movie for me. As well as the least boring music. Now Jennifer Hudson's showpiece brought the house down, people were applauding in the middle of it. But would I want to listen to that song as a song? I would not. Too many extra syllables added to each word. That kind of mannered singing bothers me.
I expect a lot more when people start talking Oscar for these kinds of roles.
