If you were REALLY going to that tiny island for the rest of your life, and you were given the choice between these two admittedly drekky films to take with you as the only film you were allowed to watch for the remainder of your life - it wouldn't be the Gladiator - would it?Digging throught the two piles of drek with long stick, we shall still find more grain for birds in Caligula.
Let's face it, the Gladiator is as shallow as it gets. It is like a children's colorful 5-page Bible brochure in the dentist' office (sorry). To say it required ANY acting is laughable - everything is binary there, with just two bits of resolution that were required.
There is much, much more in Caligula. Believe it or not, but I actually found the orgy scene the most boring of the whole film (although I do believe Kubrick just should have lifted it in its entirety - instead of attempting his own, most ridiculous version, even more boring...), but there ARE sparkles of interesting acting and even "fabula" here and there. It is far more three-dimensional.
And besides, EVERY movie with Helen Mirren is a must see... I am sure we can agree on THAT one, can't we?
I will just repeat a couple of lines from the brief review:
"This film, as with all, has good points and bad points.
In general, I feel that the good ones far outweigh the bad."
See the review link. I mostly agree with it.
Anyway, as they say, just my two rubles... and you know how much it is worth.
Follow Ups:
""If you were REALLY going to that tiny island for the rest of your life, and you were given the choice between these two admittedly drekky films to take with you as the only film you were allowed to watch for the remainder of your life - it wouldn't be the Gladiator - would it?""
It wouldn't be Caligula either. That's for sure:)""Digging throught the two piles of drek with long stick, we shall still find more grain for birds in Caligula.""
A sparrow is happy to find a grain in a pile of shit. A critic is happy when he does the opposite. No offence.""To say it required ANY acting is laughable - everything is binary there, with just two bits of resolution that were required.""
Huh?""And besides, EVERY movie with Helen Mirren is a must see... I am sure we can agree on THAT one, can't we?"'
Ever seen Cal? It is exactly what it means in our language.
Passion of Ayn Rand was drek with a capital D. A recent Teaching Ms.Tingle doesn't even need to be called a motion picture. But, yeah, she's ok. At least she had academic training and some good upbringing. The only film with her that I'd recommend is The Cook, His Wife etc, and that one because of the unusual premise. If you saw one of her films, I wouldn't recommend seing others; she's the same in all of them, like John Wayne. I wouldn't mind seing her on stage doing Moliere or something.""I will just repeat a couple of lines from the brief review""
Please no more reviews. Taken from another online rag -"Perhaps the ultimate thinking man's sex symbol, Helen Mirren...". Yeah, those warts on her face - mmmm, yammie.""Anyway, as they say, just my two rubles... and you know how much it is worth.""
Yeah, I know :)
I can thnk of only two films that I can watch again and again, as many times as I can, without getting tired of them. Barry Lyndon and My Fair Lady.
Red Rock West
Horsemen on the Roof
Ladyhawk
Shot in the Dark
Bye Bye Birdy
Once Upon a Time in the West
Once upon a Time in America
Raising Arizona
Bood Simple
The Bear
Jean De Florette
Manon of the Spring
The White Balloon
Graveyard of the Fireflies
Greasers Palace
Off the top of my head. Bye Bye Birdy I have not seen in 30 or 40 years.
I had something similiar, maybe slightly more advanced. A well-
meaning, but misguided soul brought some in a cardboard holder into
my office and there they sat on the desk for a brief period of time,
after which they were relegated to the back storeroom! - AH
