I thought the chilly beauty of the movie had more to do with Stanley Kubrick's sense of aesthetics. Alienation? I felt it was more a matter of actual isolation due to distance: Besides being time-delayed, the birthday greeting to Poole also appears on a small TV screen and sounds tinny, maybe a reminder that Earth is a long ways away, and that the Discovery crew is pretty much on their own.

The movie is very optimistic about mankind's place in the universe: The first monolith encounter starts the ape-creatures down the road to becoming modern humans, and the second leads to..? The beginning of something super-advanced, we assume.

In terms of actually making me feel like I was hallucinating, I think Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas did more for me.

By the way, check out One: A Space Odyssey. Imagine "2001" condensed down to 60 seconds and done entirely with Lego.
