  " Lefties " is not " bad " per definition ( as the word conservative..) I use it only to define.
  No doubt it was in this biased spirit that this film was made.
  As for the philosophy, if we did not knew it...

    Otherwise, it was only her father who wasn't accepting her the way she was... everyone else thought she was fine. But really the whole family were portrayed as outsiders/losers... and she's the one that showed them they weren't... that was kind of the point.

    ... everyone apart from her was an outsider...
    And was she really that fat? It was predictable to give her glasses, but the film covered the plastic nature of certain aspects of American culture in a way that has been trodden many times, but what this film had was not that it was unexpected... in fact it was overall quite predictable... but that it was FUNNY.
    And despite their outsider nature, every character showed their humanity by the end.

    I know what you mean. In my old Brooklyn neighborhood even the storefront *mannequin's* were "large" ... and I'm not kidding.
