Otherwise, it was only her father who wasn't accepting her the way she was... everyone else thought she was fine. But really the whole family were portrayed as outsiders/losers... and she's the one that showed them they weren't... that was kind of the point.

And was she really that fat? It was predictable to give her glasses, but the film covered the plastic nature of certain aspects of American culture in a way that has been trodden many times, but what this film had was not that it was unexpected... in fact it was overall quite predictable... but that it was FUNNY.
And despite their outsider nature, every character showed their humanity by the end.

Not to mention that in dysfunctional families, parents always want the kids on their side and food is a competitive sport.
I know what you mean. In my old Brooklyn neighborhood even the storefront *mannequin's* were "large" ... and I'm not kidding.
