Screenwriter/director Robert Towne waited years to cobble together support and financing for this labor of love about a struggling writer (Colin Farrell)in 1932 Los Angles and his love/hate affair with waitress Salma Hayek. Towne and the production designer and the cinematographer recreated period L.A. in Cape Town, South Africa, and the city and atmosphere becomes another character and fills out what is a very slight and familiar story, save the tension between the leads. Having marveled at what Towne gave us in "Chinatown", I expect much more here and was ultimately disappointed. Great moments of attention to detail do not add up to a great film.

I liked the look of the first 6 minutes. Predictable with a capital "P".
