Is all in the talking for his " The Queen " I tought it was time to grab this one that Bb had recommended.
First I must say that it it the first time in my life that I love a film essentially based on the life of two homosexual, more than based, in fact obsessional about it.
BOTH actors ( Gary Oldman and Alfred Molina ) are just perfect ( remember Bb finding one of them not up tp the task ).
A story so well told, one in thousand.
Mr. Frears, thank you for this wonderful work of art!
What a show!
Follow Ups:
...although they are quite different: My Beautiful Laundrette and Sammy & Rosie Get Laid. More socio-political than Prick Up Your Ears.I'd also recommend The Grifters, The Snapper, The Van, High Fidelity and Dirty Pretty Things.
I'm quite fond of Frears as a director and think he's underrated by many. He's been making interesting, quality films for a long time and seems to be on a roll with his last few.
Gumshoe, with Albert Finney and a cameo with the *lovely* Wendy Richard (pictured)The Hit; Terence Stamp, John Hurt and a very young Tim Roth
and the *lovely* Laura Del SolGrins
...I've recommended them to so many people who've looked at my funny afterwards I've become cautious about promoting them.
suggest there's a very "British" tone to these films; Hurt, Stamp, and Roth are all Brits, and so is Stephen Frears
Look at the dialog between Wendy Richard and Albert Finney; it's only a minute of film but Septic Tanks will lose 99% of this in translation ( wot? wot are they on about then? Title fight? She don't look like no boxer, Vinny...)Grins
There are not many directors who can claim such a selection of great films. And across genres as well.
One of the very best directors around and its a pleasure to know you can be successful this way.
I haven't seen The Queen as I am not sure I can have any reaction other than "Off with her head". How good is it and is it just an attempt to make her look human?
I personally find ALL that monarchy stuff totally idiotic, but then who am I to tell people how they should spend their billions upon billions of dollars... errrr... pounds?
...The Queen is a rather sly and witty fantasia on the duties of monarchy in general and Britain in particular. It's really about how Blair as PM and Elizabeth as Queen affect and change one another through their interractions above and beyond their institutional roles. Old style PR vs new style PR.
Small scale, to be sure, but well done, smart and funny.
I normally stay away from anything like that and find the whole Diana thing mystifying. But Frears has a pretty sharp eye and The Queen is well written, acted and directed.

Glad you got the wine.
Enjoy sensibly :--)
... from th dead.
How many times did I ask about Morena the Brazilian beauty, and you keep ignoring it!There must be some issue there, just can't figure out what!
And... "sensibly" is my middle name!
beauty, preferring the large-breasted Nordic/Saxonian types.
I make exceptions for such raven haired cuties as Penelope Cruz, Winona Ryder, however.
I sort of know a Russian,Ukrainian i believe who is slavishly obsessed with all thing Brazilian especially Soccer. Its certainly arm loads of fun..He's a good mensch and takes no lip when it comes to Brazil.I am mystified except for their women's firm assets.By the way,my Netflix resumes service tomorrow. What's the first, best movie they might have you'd recommend regardless of genre or plot.I've still less than a dozen in my queue.
You couldn't do better than the Spanish classic, "The Spirit of the Beehive," either.
I believe he was born there. But my today's discovery was quite something - no?If you haven't seen Barry Lyndon then it is a no-brainer. Otherwise, Forbidden Games, Vozvraschenie or Tony Takitani would do absolutely great!
My parents took me to see Barry Lyndon when it was in its first run theatrical release.I remember how uncomfortable i felt during that salon scene with all those bare breasts,lol..Still a favorite of mine being half an Irishman myself.I'll check out the others.Thanks.
Merkava got a brand new Clutch and Flywheel last week.I'm going to need to rear tires soon, :).
I think I went through six or so clutches on my 540i, before someone stole it. It is perhaps one place that is under-designed on that fine car.
Frears said he like her...
I always hoped she'd be the last one Britain would have to live through.
But since the Diana debacle they seem to have become entrenched again.
I donīt get any money...I like her too.
Unless she came under Grey Poupon sauce...

First thanks.
My Beautiful Laundrette, who has not seen that one?
NOW, I have not watched Rosie....
Nor Snapper, nor the Van, nor Dirty Pretty Things....He is a quality film maker.
Ah! And Molina a wonderful actor!
Dangerous Liasons???
The DL was OK, I loved the interiors.
And Mrs Enderson Present, already twice, savourous!
Of course!
But I am checking...The Van was title " Fish & Chips " here, so I saw it.
Was good.
But PuyE is in another league.
