Yes, and if you had a flat out vote nation-wide for "which is the superior movie" Gladiator would win hands down. Why? Because we have a VERY limited attention span. No one remembers a movie from 3 years ago, it is always rated as inferior to a comparable movie from 3 weeks ago.Look at any of those "Best of the Century" lists, be it movies, athletes, anything. They are always outrageously top-heavy with athletes from the past decade.
Personally I;d wait for Gladiator on HD rather than rent it.
Better picture and it;s free...
What- you don't have HD yet, well the 5-6 year wait for it won't kill you either. No big loss with this movieDG

Films ARE better now than they were years ago, unless you view movies as art. Let those of us who want to be entertained watch our Starship Troopers, and South Park. Yeah, you heard me.... I LIKE STARSHIP TROOPERS! Does Hollywood crave my money? Yes, and i'm glad to give it to them.
Yes, in terms of direction, acting, screen writing, many older films are superior.
Yes, I mostly think this because I was a film major in school.
Yes, I love Starship Troopers, Varsity Blues is one of my favorites too.
But I admit that I seek out non-intellectual, highly visual sources of distraction. That is what modern movies mostly are. That is what modern viewers weaned on MTV with 1 second attention spans (like me, and maybe you too) want.
These are the movies that make money, and there is no arguing with that.However, if you ask Joe Public the 10 best movies of the 20th century, most will come up with 5-6 out of the 90's simply because public memory is poor, and film history is not something most people know or care about. That is what I was pointing out.
Just like Michael Jordan being the greatest athlete of the 20th Century - do you really think he did more than Babe Ruth or Muhammad Ali, or did he just do things that are more recently capptured in public memory?

I think I’ve misrepresented my taste for movies. I’m a fan of the fantasy genre, and fed up with people attacking the simplicity of movies such as Star Wars, Conan, etc. These movies are based on the oldest form of story telling – epic poems. There’s obviously a lot of over budgeted crap out there, but movie critics telling me not to waste my money on the latest Star Wars prequel because of characters lacking incremental development really pisses me off. Most of them don’t have a clue as to what makes a good fantasy story work.I’ve got to admit that I was kinda vague in what I was trying to get across. I think it’s acceptable for movies to be short and sweet. Intellectual movies will always have their place with Joe Public, but you’ve got to understand that they’re two different forms of entertainment.
