It's been awhile since I watched, but I recall feeling about the same way about Pulse: That it was not a great movie, but I was entertained. I particularly like how some recent Asian horror movies manage to feel creepy without much CGI or suspenseful music, even in brightly sunlit spaces.I am fond of much modern Japanese horror (and to some extent, Asian horror in general). Have you also seen:
Premonition
The Eye, The Eye X
Ju-On
The Locker / The Locker 2
Pray
Cursed
Uzumaki
Follow Ups:
mentioned to my Netflix queue except Cursed, which isn't available, yet.
I'm impressed that Netflix has such good coverage; they've got some Tales of Terror from Tokyo disks that my local independent video place doesn't carry. Maybe I'll have to get myself an account too.
Hungarian, Mexican, Uruguayan, German, Brasilian, Russian, etc.?
The only alternative, really, is laying down the $40+/_ or so per DVD, right? Even the best indie stores just can't stock 75,000 selections.
And the price...
Not in the Japanese creepy but in a creepy category all its own is "Funny Games," from Germany.
I think you'd like it.
Consider it payback for all your creepy recommendations :--)
...and in order to compete, when a new Hollywood Video opened up, they didn't open up the normal lame-o store, they opened what they call a "Library Store" which they claim is also 50,000+ titles and 4x the size of a regular HV store. Between the two, I've got pretty decent coverage. But there's a lot of areas in the world I haven't touched upon in my cinematic wanderings--yet.
Mostly I rent my DVDs, but I will buy if there's no other way, or if it seems like something I might want to revisit repeatedly.
BTW, I just called store #1, and they put Funny Games on hold for me ;-)
all Hollywood...
FG is so much more than a scary film.
It is pitiless.
