Well let me start by saying that if Forrest Whittaker takes the Oscar hen I won't be surprised, his concentrated performance of the headlong dive into insanity of the Ugandan leader is as good as anything I can remember.
The film captures the feel of the times (early 70s) as the Scotiish just become doctor heads to Uganda to have fun and do good. His innocence combined with his love of the journey he sets out on in working for Amin compares and contrasts with Amin's journey from simple country boy to military madman. Both well out of their depth.
The tension and insanity rises like in Goodfellas. Really I think its comparable to that. All it lacks is SYmpathy For The Devil on the soundtrack!
This is a powerful, draining and perhaps devastating film about power and its addiction.
If you like film enough to come here, then you will want to se it. Absolutely no doubt about it.
Follow Ups:
I really didn't like this movie that much while watching because it was uncomfortable as the main character is a bit of a wanker. Later, I thought about it a lot and it has gone up in my estimation. I'm not sure I can rave about Forrest Whitaker's performance as it is pretty far off the scale and I don't know if that is really good acting or not. Comparably, I thought Nicholson's performance in The Departed was really hammy.Mostly about the regime through the eyes of an idiot naive guy who gets caught up in the times. Sets it up as pretty insulated and a trusted advisor who really doesn't see anything wrong until it is too late. The final tension about getting out is overdone and almost silly. Brings up the moral play more about omission than comission.
and been thoroughly disappointed; Hitman, Ghost Dog, Bird... don't even want to remember most of the othersI watch with a kind of fascination, because; well, he has the potential to be *amazing*, and I can't quite put my finger on why these roles haven't suited him
It's almost like he's uncomfortable wearing his own skin
He's passable in the Crying Game; not outstanding, but not bad either
Yes, he's been around for Ages, about time he did *something* goodI can believe he would make a very credible Idi Amin; I'll watch this for sure ( ! )
