How depressing can a movie be? Sweet Deborah Francois (ditch the black socks, babe) has a baby from Bruno, street hustler and thief. He is dragged into playing the father, and when he has the kid alone, sells him!!!! Lots of crime, some violence, hopelessness abounds, poverty, betrayal and reasons to hang yourself.
4 stars out 10 on the DUI scale.
Follow Ups:
...they had a best of the year top 10 countdown (probably a repeat from a few weeks earlier).A.O. Smith of the NY Times was in Ebert's chair and he rated this film one of his top 5 best films of the year.
...in their top five, or their top ten.I missed it - with my father dying I just wasn't up to it at the time, even though I really wanted to see it.
'Course I have cheery films like Children of Men, Army of Shadows and Pan's Labyrinth in my top 5.

I thought everything about this movie was really well done and very believable. Bruno was a real pathetic unsympathetic creep but totally seemed like a real person to me and his girlfriends reaction seemed right. The writing was very good on that level. A documentary style movie that starts slowly but gets your attention later on and worth a look if this sort of movie does not bother you - apparantly I can watch any kind of treachery - only real life bothers me...
guy, but how often in real life....
...which are equally as powerful as "L'Enfant"."La Promesse", "Le Fils", etc.
Phenomenal filmmakers, the brothers Dardenne.
