release that didn't have an insane crush on Jennifer O'Neill?
Yesterday, I became curious as to what happened to her. Like with old girlfriends, I should have left well enough alone.
Jenn's been married nine (yes, 9) times. Shot herself in the stomach. And, best of all, she's now a Born Again Christian, dispensing homilies and immortalizing her story in a "tell all" autobiography.
I'll let someone else read it and report back.
Now, has anyone seen the film fairly recently?
I wondered if it held up well or if it's as silly as purple bell bottoms.
Follow Ups:
When the movie came out in the early 70's, no one raised an eyebrow over the older woman-adolescent boy relationship; risque but no big deal. Today, her character would be arrested for statutory rape of the boy.
It's a great film. The condom scene in the drugstore is a classic. Gary Grimes, the male adolescent lead, made few films after that. I saw him yesterday in "The Spike Gang" on a turner network with Lee Marvin, Ron Howard, and Charles Martin Smith. He was great in that movie too, but never really contued an acting career. The Spikes Gang was his last theater motion picture work.Jennifer O'Neill never quite became the star at the level everyone expected after the Summer of '42 movie, and according to imdb, has basically dropped out of filmmaking since '02
Condom ruse was well known and used in the Hinterlands, with a wink and a nod from the local pharmacist. As for such affairs . . . we have become appallingly puritanical about such things. Things like that were not uncommon and seldom got out of hand. And they got out of hand much less often than a 15 and 16 year old get out of hand. Romeo and Juliette might be a good example.
Poor Cassanova, they would re-legalize burning at the stake for that bugger! Or George Sand.
