And how could anyone see Edward Norton as a leading man. A powerful magician? He is the guy everyone used to beat up on in junior high, and probably high school, in his case. He is a wimp, beard or not, and the wrong person for this Rasputin-like part. The surprise ending was a surprise to nobody, the acting over the top, Biehl shows no affinity for acting, Giamatti was a ham...the plot impossible.
Color was annoying; everything shot in brown.

Follow Ups:
But, like most others here I was able to follow it, "got it" and thoroughly enjoyed it.
...with the casting director who I happen to know. I agree that the color got tiring after a couple of minutes into the movie, and yes, the ending was predictable. Decent entertainment designed for mainstream audience appeal.
leading man that would fit this charismatic character. Jason Stratham was best. Otherwise, came up blank; just like when I tried to figure who should have played Garp.
Just the first to come to mind.

Sure it had flaws. At least it was intended for grownups. That alone puts it at a 90 percentile rank.
A better, more ambitious film about magicians.

and I've seen a ton of movies last year.Well actually it was a tie with "Running with Scissors" which I also liked a lot.
You seem a bit too critical. What recent movies have you enjoyed?

Darwin's Nightmare, Children of Men (to a degree). Don't blame me for the current bunch of crap movies. I don't like any current American television either.
I think he can do sinister, see Primal Fear if you doubt it, but for some reason he didn't click in this film-- though the film itself was quite weak.
I saw it as entertainment, not particularly good. Giamatti IS a ham. He usually is over-the-top. It seems to be his temperament and HE'S the type of actor that plays himself.

... is eternally young and best when he's being "snotty", I thought he was quite menacing in American History X.

Is just but a pain in the ass.
