I was intoxicated with her beauty when I first saw her play 'Wesley Crusher's girlfriend/academy classmate' on an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I was impressed with her acting ability in "Ruby In Paradise." But in her recent films I've noticed a false, stage-style broadness to her acting/roles (an acting style like in a Neil Simon romantic comedy). Particularly within this week's viewing of "Someone Like You" (warning: male-bashing chick flick), there is a lack of sincerity in her performance. Hugh Jackson and Marisa Tomei (yikes!) both fare better in this film.So have I been blinded by her beauty? Did I expect 'Jodie Foster' and end up with 'Julia Roberts' instead? Good actress? Mediocre actress? Or just a victim of the roles she's been in?
Follow Ups:
Everybody keeps talking about how hot Ashley Judd is. It started with The Devils Advocate when everybody said to watch it for "the hot girl." Well I saw the movie and when the end credits rolled, I still didn't know who "the hot girl" was, because there wasn't one! Ashley Judd, while an okay actress, is really not that pretty. I wouldn't kick her out of bed or anything, but I see far more attractive women every day. Of course I go for brunettes and classy blondes, so maybe that's why I don't like her. And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who mixes her up with Charlize Theron! They look the same! When you can't tell two actresses apart, that's not a good sign! Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
clearly you don't even know who she is. not only was she not in devil's advocate, she's naturally a brunette too.sheesh!
Held my tongue but sheesh...what are you looking at...you looking at me? AJ isn't a Hwood babe by any stretch of the i. Actually, a bit coarse up close--has a complexion prob and quite chipmonkish in person (sorry!) As an actress, well, no one is asking for Ashley types yet. She has been in quite a few bad films and compounding the problem by not building her career as an actress (vs "star") as have many of her peers by appearing in more independent/smaller features with better written roles she might show her chops--if she has any. Jury is out on that one. Needs to build a resume of quality than the dreck she has cho$en.
She's admittedly been in some horrendous flicks. But let's not forget the good work that she's done. People have mentioned Heat and Ruby in Paradise. I'd tack on Simon Birch and A Time to Kill as well as her work on Sisters (TV). I'm not saying that she's Meryl Streep, but she's batting a decent average. The only completely unwatchable flick she's been in was Eye of the Beholder... steer clear of that one folks.

Reminds me of Bridget Fonda. Very pretty, very wooden.
Properly cast in roles where she shows extreme emotion, she could do quite well.
dg
Nice to look at, can act I think. Watch her carefully in Heat.
I think she shows she can express true emotion, especially during the final scenes. Just my .02
I agree with Ed, Heat is her Hottest, as for her appearance, I cannot say I would be disappointed during a blind date!

I don't recall a single role where she would touch my heart with her acting. So I think she IS just another pretty face. She seems rather cold, emotionless. Not cold cold, but just uninvolved. On the positive side, she is quite innofensive - a true gift in today's Hollywood. Some actors irritate you after just few minutes, she doesn't, if you don't expect much of her.
She was well dressed at Oscars... and she conducts herself modestly and with grace. What more do you want from a young actress?
And what's your problem with Marisa? She deserves all kinds of breaks for "My Cousin Vinny" alone.
And speaking of female leads, who do you think will become the next Hollywood princess? We had Gwyneth for a couple of years (at least she had style, never mind her wooden acting), now - Julia (she acts far better, pretty well, actually, but boy, is she offensive!), so - who's next?
"My Cousin Vinny", she stole the show from Pesci, IMO. I also enjoyed
her performance in "The Perez Family". - AH
I agree, she's just another pretty face Admittedly, I've only seen her in the "thrillers" she's done, but her acting never got me involved in any films. I don't think she's a horrible actress, just not involving. She's not one of those actors/actresses who'll, single handedly, turn me off of a movie. I also seem to always mix her up with Charlize Theron. Don't know if it's just me.Chia-Hao
***I also seem to always mix her up with Charlize Theron. Don't know if it's just me.How could you? Charlize has not done any movie worth watching, leave alone payng to watch, but Ashley has made a couple of mildly acceptable ones. She was there when Al sprayed everything with empty brass (what's wrong with that man, anyway, first Scarface, then Heat - he must own major stock in some ammo company), and that movie, trash as it is, is still no "The Astronaut's Wife"...
> > > How could you? < < <It all started when a bunch of friends and I were watching "The Devil's Advocate" for the first time on HBO. Having missed the opening credits, none of us knew who the female lead was, and 1/2 thought Charlize was Ashley (me included) and 1/2 didn't. And I think from then on, none of the guys I saw the movie with could tell Ashley Judd from Charlize Theron.
Everyone else we know can, but that one experience with "The Devil's Advocate" screwed us all up. I think it was really the difficulty of trying to believe Keanu "WOAH!" Reeves was a lawyer. Our minds just couldn't handle that. The Charlize/Ashley thing is probably just a side effect.
Either way, IMO, neither of them are exceptionally good actresses and are just pretty faces.

***I think it was really the difficulty of trying to believe Keanu "WOAH!" Reeves was a lawyer.He-he-he... that's a good one... he-he-he...

You can always tell Ashley by her eyes - she has a problem with one opening more than another, it is easy to see on straight close shots.
As far as Keanu, I really would like to see him play an evil man. That would be a tought test. As it is now, he is so puky-good, I just can't take it.
Victor...you MUST see The Gift. It is a so-so movie, but it has Keanu as a redneck, wife-beater and he's the best thing in the movie (ok, I said it was so-so so I guess that doesn't say much, does it). But he's good. REALLY good.Doug Schneider

> > As far as Keanu, I really would like to see him play an evil man. < <He was a serial killer in last year's "The Watcher." He played the evil Don John in Branagh's "Much Ado About Nothing." And if evil robots matter, check out his double role in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey."
Ahh, the Classics!
P.S.--IMO, Keanu and Charlize both did their best acting in "The Devil's Advocate."
> > > And if evil robots matter, check out his double role in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey." < < <Yes, he took on the tough dual role of a good-guy slacker AND a bad-guy slacker. While some actors settle for playing two good twins (i.e. Jean Claude VanDamme in "Double Take"?), others, like Keanu, take on the challenge of playing their own evil twin. :-) And I use the word actor in the loosest of sense when referring to JCVD.
> > > P.S.--IMO, Keanu and Charlize both did their best acting in "The Devil's Advocate." < < <
I think Charlize did a good job in that. As I said, I didn't buy Keanu as a lawyer, he failed to convince me he was a lawyer. IMO, Keanu plays a great slacker. I liked him in "The Matrix" as I could believe him in that role.

Why Britney, of course. Can't you smell the Pepsi? And if she's good enough for Bob Dole... (cute and funny, but if Clinton was in that commercial it would be creepier than Hell).

As in Britney Sphere-- uh, Spears? Acting? Okay, that's a frightening thought. Wow, just imagine, if she was acting, she could win an Oscar for best actress AND best original score/musical performance. :-)

Victor....I hope it's going to be Nathalie P. for a LONG time (or maybe Penelope Cruz!)Doug Schneider
***I hope it's going to be Nathalie P. for a LONG timeNo way... unless she adapts... but she doesn't seem to be all that excited about acting, strange as it is.
But speaking of her, I am perhaps allowed to have some of that Nabokian tendency... nut what's YOUR excuse?
Cruz? I don't think so. To foreign.
My excuse? You just have to look at her to know that I don't need an excuse!
I have to second Penelope Cruz -- she is another pretty face, but I think much prettier than most. And she can act. Even in a lightweight movie like "Woman On Top", she comes off pretty good. (Of course, the soundtrack doesn't hurt this movie either).
