This movie got a number of "best" awards from Cannes.
I rented it this evening expecting more than I got.
Slow, painstakingly laborious. Too little dialog to impart what the director/writer was trying to get across.
This film got so many awards but I fail to see why.
The film was reviewed by tinnear (see URL below).(not trying to bash you)
I am a neophyte film viewer. I will admit that.
I would love to have some of you other folks who have a critical eyes/views rent and critique this movie, but, I ask you NOT to read the plot ahead of time.
Perhaps I am displaying my ignorance, but , ONLY after I saw the director's interview on the DVD , did I understand what he was trying to impart.
In my opinion, the writer/director's screen writing was so poor, that he failed to tell the story properly.
What can I do to learn how to read into films what others evidently have the skill to see.

Follow Ups:
linked because I don't know anything about your film tastes.
Now, I hope YOU don't take this negatively: this film is a lesson in sublety. No, there isn't a lot of dialogue: one senses the tension by what is NOT done, as much as what is.
One example: in that society, as is shown, hospitality is not just a favor but a responsibility. Whether or not it is a burden, the host cannot or should not convey.
Anyhow, you may wish to revisit it now that you have heard the director.
There are many such movies. As I've mentioned, it's almost a genre, i.e. the mid-life crisis.
"A Taste of Cherry," "Japon," "La Dolce Vita", "8 1/2..." There are many superb films, among the best ever made.
But hey, not everyone will like everything.
I almost feel like I owe you your rental fee...
Sorry, but my opinion is just that of one guy.
Since the Film Asylum group is such a caring group to offer to reimburse me, I want to let you know...
I found the movie "Distant" at the Video store, viewed it then looked at what inmates had to say about it.
Evidently few others have had a chance to see it.
(So, Tinear, you don't need to spring for a video rental...but thanks anyway)
What is wrong with you?
Wanna give the fucker his money back?
