Don't think much about it. I had seen many far better films in 2006.Maybe 6 out of 10. Tedious and meandering, largely pointless - its whole message could have been said in twenty minutes... OK, twenty more for some good shots, and be done.
Follow Ups:
I suppose the underlying theme could be expressed more quickly. Speed is not always the goal in cinema. Heck I could some up any Shakespeare play in five minutes and explain the themes in less. I'm not saying this movie is brilliant or Shakespeare but for me it does what it sets out to do pretty well. It is fairly oiriginal and it has some very nice performances.
It is not the length per se. There could be long and slow passages that speak to you, force to to think along. I love those. Here, on the other hand, we had many instances when you get restless. You feel like saying "OK, guys, I got the message, we exhausted the subject, let's move on!"With many films you can have such a moment. Here there were too many. I had all the time at my disposal, was in no hurry, yet it still bothered me.
Personal thing, I am sure.
I don't recall feeling that during this movie but that certainly doesn't mean you shouldn't have.
THIS moment is SO important that we're going to drag it out. That's great if it's true but in this movie it isn't.All of that importance and I walked feeling... if not nothing then very little.

"I'm going to go pack for France."

...not sure what to conclude from your review Victor...I mean, other then it sucked. nt
You mean besides the fact that it did not touch me and did not produce an urge to write about it? If it wasn't linked to the Oscars this year, I would probably have not even mentioned it.
I didn't think of reading between the lines that didn't exist nt

...Amores Perros. 21 Grams was more of same, except set in US, and Babel suffered from script problems the director was never able to overcome. This group forms a trilogy of sorts - Inarritu says he will move on from here, thank God.I'll allow that Babel is ambitious, but for me it was the least successful offering from the "Three Amigos" this year (Cuaron with Children of Men and del Toro with Pan's Labyrinth made the best films of their careers).
How typical that Oscar was most enamored of the least film of the three.

...and I've been waiting for the encore ever since :-(I blame Arriaga as much as Inarritu. Lotta talent there, but it's time to move on.
I get it now- Thanks nt
that Altman has done so well has really become a distracting gimic as evidenced in this film.Overall I enjoyed it - not earthshattering or as his other works - just a good night's viewing with a contrived story IMO.
or as good as his other works
