David Denby, normally one of our more dismal national critics, has written a gem.

In the past, mainstream audiences notoriously resisted being jolted. Are moviegoers bringing some new sensibility to these riddling movies? What are we getting out of the overloading, the dislocations and disruptions?

This rather lengthy article discusses such films from J.B Priestly's and Quentin Tarantino's, to Inarritu's Babel; his opinions may surprise many. And he finishes with a short but profound meditation on The Lives of Others.

PS Of such riddling movies, of those I have seen, I liked only Amores Perros -- Eternal Sunshine and Memento were OK, however.
