Has anyone else caught this fine film? I think it opened last last year in certain media centers (e.g., LA, New York), but it just opened in Dallas this past week. Here is a brief synopsis taken from www.landmarktheatres.com:
Set in 1943 during World War II, director/co-writer Rachid Bouchareb tells the tale of a group of North African soldiers who join the French in their fight against the Nazis. Although they passionately battle to defend the "fatherland," a place they've never been, the soldiers face inequality and daily humiliation within the French army. These heroes that history forgot won battles throughout Europe before finding themselves alone to defend a small village against a German battalion. Starring Sami Bouajila, Jamel Debbouze, Roschdy Zem and Samy Nacéri. Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.
This is an excellent movie, highlighting a little known chapter from WW2. With no easy or quick plot gimmicks at the end, this movie shows Algerian Muslims fighting under the command of and side and side with the French.
