I have the US designated dvd version of this film, the one encoded to play in all regions. I don't know for sure, but I believe this version is the only one offered to play in region 1-only players.
My question is for anyone with an all region player and the Hong Kong region 3 version dvd. Are you experiencing any issues with the video quality? Plus, is the spoken language natural and truly native to the actors?
The reason I ask is the US version is dubbed in a choice of Cantonese or Mandarin. The picture is stretched and appears to have been shot with a soft-focus filter. Very dark at times and noisy, like poorly lit digital photography.
Obviously a disappointing showing of this fine film. Does the region 3 or any other version look and sound better?

I've been told by a couple of people that they prefer the Hollywood remake "The Lake House" over the original "Il Mare."
I have yet to see "Il Mare," but I surprisingly enjoyed the American version, considering I do NoT like the Reeves and Bullock.

  I actually liked lake House, much to my surprise. Its a bit more accessable to Americans. Seeing Il Mare first helpd. Despite having the same basic story, they have completely different styles.

  My recent viewing of �The Lake House� was because of what others have written on movie forums, which is what people have told you.
  It may be a language thing. Since I don't speak Korean or Chinese, surface emotions conveyed through the dialogue can sometimes be guesswork to me. But, I sense the deeper feelings more as I follow the action and read subtitles. This may be a part of my personal preference of foreign film or it's simply a cultural difference. The voice-over narrations from Keanu and Sandra just seemed so flat to me, which were really needed to convince us of their changing feelings. The storyline is filled out more in TLH, so maybe it's a toss up.

I have a Korean version, and it looks reasonably good. I've had no problems with the PQ or audio.
It sounds like you got a bootleg. There is NO reason why a US version would be *dubbed* Mandarin or Cantonese, considering its a Korean movie. Also, there is no reason for the picture to be stretched. It may be a bit soft at times, but that is as the director intended.
Where did you buy this disc?

  Hello Jack, I was hoping you would respond.
  The dvd was purchased a while ago from Frys Electronics. No bootleg appearance of the disc or materials, but I always thought it could have been. I recently checked the YesAsia site and the US version dubbed in Cantonese/Mandarin is the only region 1 version available. Jeon Ji-Hyun is almost unrecognizable because of the spread - she looks about 5 foot 2 and 135 lbs.
  I have been considering an all-region player again, but to do it right I would have to upgrade most everything in my HT room. When I am ready, I hope you can offer some recommendations.

    You are right, and I find it odd that the R1 would be stretched and dubbed.
    That said, Amazon lists 2 other versions that are all-region. One is a 2 disc, the other a 3 disc (one is the CD soundtrack). Both are widescreen. It might be worth looking into, if you want a good copy of the movie. I may get the 3 disc, just for the CD.

      Thanks, I will look into the Amazon products. I'm with you, the soundtrack may be nice to have as well.
      Regarding Jeon Ji-Hyun, I enjoyed "My Sassy Girl" and "Windstruck", is "Daisy" worth a look?

        She's also in The Uninvited.
        BTW, The Il Mares are available via Amazon's marketplace-don't let that throw you off, I've had good luck getting hard to find discs that way.
