Superior films are often made about people and families struggling during turbulent cultural and social change. Perhaps this explains why Chinese and Russian films set in the 20th Century are so interesting, while most American films set in this period are just plain boring. Americans have not been challenged to totally reinvent themselves.

I've never seen a movie directed by Zhang Yimou that was less than very good. See as many of them as you can find.
