Cannes Festival (9-20 May) fever heating up here. Any bets?
With Luv Ullman presiding maybe one of the 3 Japanese films, the new Joel Cohen or the Sean Penn? I'll go for Shinji Aoyama - his +3 hour Eureka was cosmic!
Follow Ups:
Next you are gonna tell us you are taking a two week vacation to go there...Here we are happy with our small PhillyFest... so it closes the gap somewhat: our friends saw the "Under the Sand" in Paris three weeks ago, we saw it this weekend... thank God for that much.
Is there a web site for Cannes? At any rate, it seems so distant - like life on Mars...
But there ARE few (very few...) good things about living in Europe.
Hi Victor,
Even broom cupboards have been rented there at astronomical prices for months now and I don't fancy sleeping on the beach.
Anyway, actually being there sounds like a real circus.
The Philly fest looks real fun, I envy you.
Yes, Charlotte still cuts it.
Here's the official site : http://www.festival-cannes.fr

Well, if you'd have lived through the Thatcher years in the UK, you see why living in SW France is, well, good!
***The Philly fest looks real fun, I envy you.Well, we are doing our best, full time jobs, etc... One of the best parts is the small crowds you typically see there - except for some films.
***Yes, Charlotte still cuts it.
True, and real shame she has been so dormant lately, for she can act. And she knows how to age gracefully. So far Under the Sand is the best among the ones we have seen.
But if any film ever needed that idiotic "John married Mary and now has law practice in Nebraska" at the end (for the benefit of the typical American audience brought up on the made-for-TV, based-on-true-story "drama") then this is it.
A film with NO answers? Too much man, too much...
Last night it was "A Matter of Taste" (or a "Question of Taste" in other translation), and we didn't care much for it. Perhaps you saw it, since it is a 2000 film. Good lead actors, to be sure, but the rest just too shallow to enjoy.
Jean-Pierre Lorit we remember by his small but well done role in "Nelly and Mr. Arnaud", and Bernard Giraudeau - how could anyone forget him in "Passion of Love" - what a strange but good movie.
And we are really looking forward to seeing the "Aberdeen" (also with Charlotte) on Friday. Its stock is climbing, with the shows sold out, and the organizers moving it to the largest room they have access to.
Have you seen it?
I must admit I'm not that drawn to most present day french films. I find them either 'talking head' style or just plain stoopid.
The last I saw was Jeunet's 'Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain' which was a little light, but quite worth seeing, I felt.
Before was 'Les Rivières Poupres' by Kasovitch but it was a letdown after the excellent book.
Haven't seen Aberdeen - if you get to see it, let me know how it was.
Have you seen 'Les Enfants du Paradis' - that's an all-time favorite of mine?
***Haven't seen Aberdeen - if you get to see it, let me know how it was. Will do.

Most definitely. About thirty years ago in Leningrad. My wife loves it, I am a bit softer towards it.
BTW, there is another film about Lacenaire - "The Elegant Criminal" with Daniel Auteuil. What a bunch of French kaka...
